Garner Strong in Second Start of the Year

Fargo, ND – The Laredo Lemurs (7-8) starting pitcher Scott Garner shuts down the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks (5-9) in a 5-1 win on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,858 fans at Newman Outdoor.

Garner’s (2-1) second outing of the year was a strong one as the right-hander went six innings while scattering five hits and gave up one earned run. He was relieved by Rett Varner who threw two shutout innings. John Brebbia closed out the ninth with a shutout frame.

It was an interesting start to say the least. The game began with a 47 minute rain delay due to rain moving through the Fargo-Moorhead area. The game began and RedHawks starting pitcher Brandon Mann was ejected early in the first inning. Already trailing 3-0, after a sacrifice fly it appeared as if Mann made a comment to third base umpire Michael Campbell who proceeded to eject him. Manager Doug Simunic came out to find the reason for the ejection. It was already the second time Simunic came out to chat with Campbell, as he was in disagreement with a runner called safe at third earlier in the frame. Then Charlie Valerio proceeded to back out of the box as a pitch was incoming. Things would begin to settle down in the third inning.

Bryan Blough came on in relief for the RedHawks after the Mann ejection. Blough was solid out of the bullpen for Fargo-Moohead. He went 6.1 strong innings, giving up only two earned runs while striking out six. He was relieved by Jonathan Chudy for the final two frames. The rookie had another good outing, only giving up one hit.

The Lemurs offense was provided Denis Phipps who went 3×4 with a home run, two doubles and 2 runs batted in.  Tony Delmonico also had a three hit game with a double and two runs batted in.  Abel Nieves chipped in with two hits including a double.

Brandon Mann (1-2) will take the loss for Fargo-Moorhead while Scott Garner (2-1) earns the win for the Lemurs. The two teams will return on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the rubber match of a three-game series. Tyler Herron is set to take the mound for the RedHawks and Matt Loosen will toe the rubber for the Lemurs.
