Lemurs Detonate Blasters

Laredo came in to their game with the Joplin Blasters needing a win to give them their third series win against their division oppenent. The Lemurs dug themselves a hole early though, forcing the offense to come back midway through the game. Laredo got a solid start from recently acquired Joe Testa and another solid outing from their bullpen while the bats came up big to give them an 8-4 victory over the Blasters.

Joe Testa’s Lemurs debut got off to a rocky start as he gave up four runs on four hits and a walk in the first inning against the Blasters. He would settle down though ang give up just two hits and no runs over his next six innings of work, shutting down the Joplin lineup. Testa would finish with four runs allowed over seven innings on six hits and two walks while striking out seven Blasters hitters in the process. The offense came to his aid after his rough first inning giving him a win in his first start with the Lemurs.

The Lemurs offense was present all game long at the plate as they totalled 14 hits on the night. While they scored eight runs, they did manage to strand 10 runners on base, including five in the first three innings. It took the Lemurs unitll the third inning to get on the board. Jesus Posso lead off the third inning with a solo home run over the bleacher seats past the left field fence to make it 4-1. With two outs in the innings, Leandro Castro, Cesar Valera, and Zane Chavez would all get hits to combine for two more runs, pulling the Lemurs within one run after three innings.

Laredo would break through and take the lead a couple innings later in the 5th. Denis Phipps would lead off the inning with a walk, followed by a Castro double that hit third base and bounced into left field. With runners on second and third Valera would hit a sacrifice to drive in Phipps. Then Chavez would single to score Castro and put Laredo up 5-4.

That lead would hold until the top of the 9th when Laredo would add to it, Phipps, Castro, and Cavez would again be the key players at the plate for the Lemurs. Phipps reached with his first hit of the game, a single. That would be followed by a Castro bunt single. Third baseman Geraldo Valentin would throw the ball in to the first base dugout, allowing Phipps to score. A couple batters later, with Castro on third and one out, Chavez would drive the first pitch he saw from Carlos Fuentes over the right field wall to give the Lemurs a four run lead, 8-4.

Joplin would go down in order in the 9th and Laredo would pick up its 22nd win of the season. After winning the first two games of the series against the Blasters, the Lemurs have now taken each of the first three series of the season against the Blasters. Laredo will play a total of six series against the Joplin this season. The Lemurs go for the sweep Thursday, sending right-hander Ryan Beckman to the mound against fellow righty Alex De La Cruz.
