Lemurs Drop Opener to Goldeyes

The Laredo Lemurs came into the series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes hoping to build off their big win the night before. However, the Goldeyes had different ideas. The starting pitching at Uni-Trade Stadium was once again excellent for both teams. However the Lemurs bullpen faltered late and put the close game out of reach dropping the Lemurs to 2-3 on the season with their 6-1 loss tonight to the Goldeyes.

The scoring started earlier for the Winnipeg Goldeyes tonight as they got a two out two-run home run from Jacob Rogers in the first inning off Lemurs starter Troy Marks. Marks would settle down and only give up two more hits in his first start of the season. He did struggle with walks a bit in the ballgame, putting five Goldeyes aboard freely. Overall on the night, Marks gave up two runs on three hits, while walking five and striking out five.

The Lemurs out hit the Goldeyes tonight 8-7 but it didn’t go Laredo’s way in the run column. The only run the Lemurs would score tonight was a solo home run in the 7th inning by Travis Denker. It was the first home run of the season for the team. Starter Kyle Anderson was very effective at scattering the seven hits he allowed tonight as he didn’t walk any batters and struck out three over 6.1 innings.

The Lemurs bullpen was strong initially tonight with Kyle Winkler making his Lemur debut with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. Jose Nivar would also throw an inning striking out all three batters he faced. But in the top of the 9th and down by a run the usually lock down Harold Guerrero gave up four runs on four hits and a walk. Guerrero entered the game having struck out the last 10 batters he had faced and having not allowed a single base runner. The Goldeyes did not care though and found a way to widen the score to 6-1 in their last frame.

6-1 would be the final score as the Goldeyes bullpen shut down the Lemurs bats. Tomorrow’s game at 7:05 will feature two right-handers in Ryan Beckman for Laredo and Mikey O’Brien for Winnipeg.
