Pitching was the theme of the game once more in Laredo tonight in the third game of the season. The Lemurs rode great pitching from their staff into the late innings tonight. However, it was not enough tonight as the RedHawks also got solid pitching and one big hit to take down the Lemurs 1-0.
Each pitching staff threw 12 shutout innings tonight. The Lemurs had multiple opportunities in the game with runners in scoring position to break the scoreless tie, but they could not manage to bring the critical run around. The lone run in the ballgame came when Luke Bailey led off the top of the 13th inning with a solo home run to left field off of his former teammate Ryan Beckman. Beckman, the opening day starter, threw two innings of relief tonight and took the loss.
Lemurs starter Matt Sergey was on fire just as he was last season for the Lemurs. He picked up his 20 innings scoreless regular season streak and kept it going all night. Sergey ended up allowing just two hits over six shutout innings of work while walking two and striking out seven would be RedHawk hitters. That runs his regular season scoreless inning streak to 26 going back to last season.
Speaking of streaks, Harold Guerrero has struck out the last 10 batters he has faced this season, including all six that he faced tonight. He threw two scoreless innings of relief coming in for Sergey. Also tossing for Laredo tonight was Luis De La Cruz, Jeff Inman, Jose Nivar, and the aforementioned Ryan Beckman. De La Cruz, Inman, and Nivar all threw an inning each of shutout baseball.
Tyler Herron, the Fargo-Moorehead starter, was just as good tonight on the mound. He was looking for some revenge after a poor outing against the Lemurs last season that resulted in a loss. Herron would throw 8.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing five hits while walking one and striking out four. Will Mathis, Colton Reavis, Tyler Stirewalt, and Travis Ballew combined to throw 4.2 scoreless innings for Fargo-Moorehead tonight. Stirewalt got his first win of the season while Ballew recorded his second save.
The Lemurs have one more game in the series with the RedHawks on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CT.
