Lemurs Sweep Saltdogs in Wild Game

Laredo, TX – The Laredo Lemurs (6-7) scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Able Nieves knocked in Tyler Forney from third base to give the Lemurs a 7-6 win on Wednesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.

The scoring started with Lemurs starter Sam Martin on the mound when Jon Gaston struck a long fly over the right field wall to give the Saltdogs a 1-0 lead.

Martin would settle down after that and put in the longest start of the season for a Lemurs starter.  Martin went six innings giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and two punch outs.  Martin was not involved in the decision in the ballgame.

The Lemurs offense would strike in the third.  The inning started with a Nieves walk and then Juan Silverio hit his second home run in as many nights to give the Lemurs a 2-1 lead.  The inning would keep going as Denis Phipps singled and stole second base.  Then with one out Tony Delmonico launched a homer over the left field wall to give the Lemurs a 4-1 lead after three frames.

In the seventh, the wheels fell off defensively for the Lemurs as they made three errors in the inning with five runs scoring on two hits.  Two of the errors were made by Lemurs right fielder Denis Phipps with two runs scoring on the plays.  The other error was made by catcher Luke Bailey after he threw the ball into center field trying to throw out Eddie Young at second on a stolen base attempt. At seventh-inning stretch time, the Saltdogs held a 6-4 lead.

The Lemurs would then charge right back in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up at six.  Abel Nieves picked up one of his three hits to start off the frame, then Silverio would walk to put runners at first and second.  Denis Phipps singled to load the bases and then D’Vonrey Richardson would get the big double down the left field line to score two and tie the game. Phipps was thrown out at the plate for the first out of inning.

The Lemurs would get the game winning hit in the bottom of the eighth with Abel Nieves driving Tyler Forney for a 7-6 Lemurs lead.

Lemurs’ reliever B.J. Hyatt (1-0) picked up the win as he gave up one hit and struck out a batter in the eighth.

Conor Spink (0-1) was given the loss after he allowed the Lemurs to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth. John Brebbia notched his second save after striking out two en route to a perfect inning.
