The official statistician of the American Association, Pointstreak, has announced that Laredo Lemurs RHP Matt Sergey has been named this week’s Point streak Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 30.
Sergey made one start this week and made it count. In a Tuesday outing against the Grand Prairie AirHogs, he tossed a complete game one-hit shutout. The Lemurs took a 9-0 win as Sergey walked just one batter and struck out 12.
The start was only his second with the Lemurs. Laredo acquired Sergey in a trade on August 15 from the Washington WildThings of the Frontier League. He made his Laredo debut on August 19, tossing five shutout innings in a no-decision against the Sioux Falls Canaries. Sergey allowed just three hits and a walk, striking out six in the game.
Sergey, who pitched collegiately at Campbell University, was in his third season with the Frontier League before the trade. He pitched with the Southern Illinois Miners and Gateway Grizzlies in 2013, going 2-5 with a 4.97 ERA and 71 strikeouts. He spent 2014 with Washington, where he was 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 18 appearances (six starts). Sergey made Frontier League history by throwing a perfect game on August 24, 2014 against the Grizzlies.
The Lemurs are now 52-41, three games behind the first-place Wichita Wingnuts in the South Division. They currently have a one-game lead in the wild card race over the Joplin Blasters. Laredo opens a road series at the Kansas City T-Bones on Monday at7:05 p.m.
