The Laredo Lemurs showed up in Gary throwing one of their All-Star pitchers looking to start their longest road trip of the season. The high walls of U.S. Steelyard was not kind to the Lemurs though as the RailCats took game one in walk-off fashion 3-2.
Leandro Castro hit what he thought was a home run in the second inning to give the Lemurs the lead, however it hit the left field fence about a foot below the top and got a double. He would fail to score at all that inning. Gary would open the scoring by playing two runs in the sixth thanks to a single, triple, and wild pitch.
Laredo finally got on the board in the seventh and then again in the eighth with RBIs from former RailCats Drew Martinez and J.D. Pulfer. Castro would lead off the ninth inning and thought he had a home run again, as did the whole Lemurs team. However, his line drive rocketed off the top of the wall and back in to play and he once more got a double and failed to score.
The RailCats needed only two pitches in the ninth inning to walk-off with win. Luis Pollorena hit Alex Crosby with the first pitch of the inning. Jose Gonzalez then hit the next pitch to the left-center gap for a double, driving in Crosby from first for the win.
Lemurs starter Barret Loux threw 6.1 innings tonight, giving up two runs on six hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Pollorena took the loss, throwing 1.2 innings giving up a run on one hit, a walk, and a strikeout.
At the plate the Castro led the way with three hits, two of which were doubles. Martinez also had two hits, one was a double, and an RBI. Game two of the series is Wednesday at 12:10 PM CT.
