The Lemurs have sent another player on to the affiliated baseball ranks. Matt Sergey had his contract purchased by the Oakland Athletics and will report to one of their minor league affiliated ball clubs. This is will be his first time in affiliated baseball after starting his first four seasons on pro ball in the independent ranks.
Sergey has been dominant in the American Association this season with a 4-0 record in seven starts. He exits the AA while placing second in the league in ERA with a 0.82 and first in strikeouts with 56. In his last game with the Lemurs, Sergey threw seven innings allowing just one run on six hits while striking out eight batters and walking two. He earned the win as the Lemurs were victorius 4-1 over the Sioux Falls Canaries on June 24th.
Sergey was drafted in the 45th round of the 2007 draft out of high school, but did not sign. He attended Campbell University and then started his career in Independent Baseball in the Frontier League. Sergey joined the Lemurs last season after a trade with the Washington WildThings and helped the Lemurs win the 2015 American Association Championship.
The Lemurs have now sent three players to affiliated baseball this season and all coming in the last three weeks. Along with Sergey, the Lemurs have sent Kyle Winkler (Tampa Bay) and Travis Denker (Arizona) to affiliated ball as well.
